Used-car test-drive checklist

Prepare before the appointment
Confirm the exact vehicle and availability, ask that it be accessible and reasonably cold when you arrive, and bring your licence plus any required insurance information. Review the listing first so the drive can focus on unanswered questions rather than basic specifications. Plan a route with city speeds, a faster road, turns, braking, and a rougher surface where safe.
Check usability before moving
Adjust the seat, wheel, mirrors, and head restraint. Test entry and exit for each seating row, child-seat locations, cargo access, visibility, and storage. Pairing a phone, understanding climate controls, and locating frequently used switches can reveal whether the cabin will work comfortably every day.
Listen during start-up
With the audio system off, observe how quickly the engine starts, whether warning lights clear normally, and whether unusual vibration, smoke, or persistent noises appear. For an electric or hybrid vehicle, check the charge information, displayed range, drive modes, and any available battery documentation.
Use a repeatable driving route
Notice steering response, straight-line tracking, brake feel, transmission behaviour, suspension noise, wind noise, and power delivery. Perform ordinary parking manoeuvres and test the camera and sensors. Avoid trying to diagnose a problem from one symptom; record it and request a qualified inspection.
Review after the drive
Check the ground and engine area where appropriate for obvious leaks or smells, review tire condition, and confirm any questions about service history, keys, manuals, accessories, warranty information, and available history documentation. Do not let the excitement of a good drive replace a written comparison and purchase-document review.
