Get an accurate payoff

The balance shown on a statement may differ from the amount required to close the loan on a specific date. Ask the lender for a current payoff and instructions. Do not share account credentials; use approved verification methods in the final transaction.

Compare payoff with appraised value

Positive equity exists when verified value exceeds payoff and may be applied to the next purchase, subject to transaction structure. Negative equity exists when payoff exceeds value. Keep the trade calculation separate from the new vehicle price so each figure remains clear.

Consider negative-equity options

Possible paths may include paying the difference, postponing the transaction, choosing a different vehicle, or financing an allowed portion subject to lender approval. Adding negative equity increases the amount financed and can deepen the gap between balance and vehicle value.

Prepare the documentation

Ownership records, identification, registration, lender and account details, payoff authorization, keys, and service records may be requested. Requirements depend on jurisdiction, lender, and title status. Confirm the list before visiting.

Review every final figure

Check the trade allowance, payoff, equity, vehicle price, fees, taxes, amount financed, rate, term, and payment in writing. No appraisal or financing outcome is guaranteed until verification and signed agreements are complete.
